Despite the demise of the show, y'all aren't the only ones to deal with this type of medium in today's social climate in the sphere of collective consciousness. It just goes to show that y'all are onto something. I've come across a lot of articles and references to shipping containers being examined for new purposes, and I just thought I'd share in case not everyone has seen them. (I apologize for my inability to wrap my head around the true nature of this show/the [container(space)] project. I am trying my best, but feel free to let me know if my wording doesn't capture it. )

Also, Daniel, can you post your availability for this week?
I am available to help install the floor this Saturday after 3pm and for a few hours any time on Sunday.
Were you able to cut enough planks(?) for the floor?

We are trying to install all the work next Tuesday right?

Kevin, did the postcards get sent out for printing?

I want to print it out at a larger size than 8.5 x 11 and post them around AVT, the JC and other places on campus.

Here are some links to companies involved with the making or certifying of the container.

1-SKS Paint Co.
-they made the "paint" which is a "cholorinated rubber finish" called by it's trade name, Unirubber-= HB. More can be found on their site

2-Hung Myung Industrial Co. Ltd., Seoul Korea

-Original manufacturer, in 1978, good luck finding a website

3-Bureau Veritas
-They have tons of info and a good story on their site.
-The original company that made global trade posssible by the standardization of shipping standards, regulations and such for insurance companies. They inspected this container in Nov. of 1978 for approval to be used on the high seas

4-Genstar Corp (london) originally bought the container from Hung Myung Ind Co Ltd. Seoul) They we bought by GESEACO in 1998 (location??) and somehow ended up at mason as storage on one of the athletic fields for a while. The GMU ID number that is on the right door indicates to the person who keeps such records at GMU that it was surplused at least 4 years ago, afetr which they keep no records but there is more info she can find, contact me if you want that office number..(rose?)

Container Construction:
-Theres lots of info out there about how containers were designed for a specific purpose to uniform sizes to expedite shipping at ports, there ability to quickly be moved to trains and semi's...maybe look there

-----Also, Heinrich Wilhelm Brandes, a professor at Leipzig, made a meteorological study of the Christmas Eve Storm of 1821, which is the one that crushed many insurance companies and from which Bureau Veritas was born, bringing into being the modern global shipping industry we know today. This guy made a map but I haven't been able to find it...

Materials:
Screws-I have a bunch of original rusty screws that can be used for research, not for object-making. Think photo, print or chemical anlysis...
Rust-I have a pile of rust and sawdust that might be used somehow
Boards- I have a lot of original floorboards that are cedar. I for one am curious about their age, probable origin, etc
ID Plates-I'm currently trying to strip all the paint off of these to make relief prints from them.
Paint-Theres a ton of paint and rust on the outside of the container that can be taken away or used somehow, rubbings? scratchings? etc

I will still be working during the Tues/Thurs time slots if anyone would like to assist but otherwise "working times" won't be scheduled as it seems nearly counterproductive for me to create times for no one to come to.

wear good shoes and clothes you can afford to get messed up when you come. We have safety gear as well if required.

Container(Space) etc

Hi All,

I wanted to post an update on our recent meeting so those of us who couldn't be there would be in the loop. I know that Shannon was kind enough to film our discussion, so maybe that will be posted, too.

So, the basic principal of our upcoming show, April 13 - April 17, as far as I understood it was twofold:

1) To come together as a group and help finish the Container(Space.) It is very important for all of us to contribute some time to this in order for the show to actually take place. The container is well on its way to being presentable to the public (although electricity will come later.) We need to help finish painting the interior, help finish the skylights, and help install the new flooring (there might be more that needs to be done, but maybe Daniel can tell us if so).

b) To use our individual artistic skills to help create and exhibit an informational showcase about the container(space) and the ideas surrounding the container: globalization, recycling, shipping, etc. Our "creations" will be informed by the history of the container, the materials used in the container, etc. The "research" we do will stem from each of us taking initiative and informing ourselves about the container. Ideas:
*Take photos of the shipping yards up in Baltimore, by the bay for display in the space.
*Use the red paint that was made to match that used on the exterior of the container for a painting, to print a sheet with information about the container.
*Use materials extracted from the container to make something.
*Is there a sign for the space?
*Make a handout from recycled materials about the "green-ness" of the space...etc

My hope is that Daniel will be able to provide us with some more detailed information he has been able to collect. For example, is there a list of places in the world that this container has been? Is there a list of where the materials used in the container came from and what they are?

Also, once we have a schedule of when Daniel (or other leaders in the project) are working on the container, we can post our availabilities.

(I am available for several hours on Sat/Sun, Mornings on T/Th, and 4:30- 7pm on M/W.)

In other news, Kevin and I have agreed to work on publicizing the project. If anyone has any ideas about that, please feel free to share.

I am interested in working on a "Shipping/Recycled" rope with Erin as part of that. The rope would extend out of the sculpture yard, possible into the courtyard by the JC and the AVT building to spark interest and entice people to follow it on down to where we are located.

Also, I am very interested in getting a list and chronology of places visited by the container in order to make an "informational map/painting thing" about globalization for the show.
